The Twitter Experiment

Twitter Stats

Lately I have been experimenting with Twitter as there is alot of buzz surrounding the social site, so I decided to do an experiment just to see how much traffic twitter can deliver and is it worth it? Well I decided to do this experiment on this current blog for 1 month this was between April 14th 08 – May 14th 08. As you can see from the stats above twitter had been sending around 120 uniques a day which is ok. I have been carefully tracking these visitors and although I cant track how many people are personally bookmarking the site I can track my subscribers. So since I started this I have got a few extra subscribers than normal daily. But if you take a look at the bounce rate from twitter it is extrodinarily high with alot of people staying on the blog for less than 1 min. Therefore from this experiment I have learnt that although twitter has the potential to send alot of traffic how much of this is actually worth it? Ok it may be because of the fact that most people on twitter dont know what SEO is and I may have been targetting the wrong audience but I feel for most online businesses or blogs looking to bring in targetted traffic twitter is not the way to go.

Feel free to leave comments of your twitter traffic and if it has been succesful to your niche. One great thing about twitter though is the communications you can have with people and you can learn alot and obtain a lot of knowledge so just participating and speaking to a wide variety of people can give you a great headstart.

i wonder if you should so strongly disregard twitter. how many people follow you? gotta take that into account. i’m pretty sure robert scoble would give you different stats.

also, it is so easy to add something to twitter, why not do it? it takes less than a minute. and twitter can be linked to facebook, friendfeed, and who knows where else. this means your link is syndicated over a large network with a simple tweet (tweet, twoot, twit, whatever).

I just finished reading your post…. I don’t get any traffic via twitter. But then again, I’m only being followed by 10 ppl. I see your followers are in the thousands!

yes.. twitter is a great social tool and it will keep on going, as long as the ceo is not stupid. Anyhow, its a great traffic magnet :-)

  6. I have been threatening to sign up to all those social networking sites for some time now, but have resisted it largely due to the hype – but in apparently I’ve seen the benefit of using them. I will sign up to twitter now and see how it goes.

Nice blog by the way :)

I think it is a useful tool, while you may not get too much traffic because you have a pretty specialized product that you are offering. I actually found you through Twitter and actually am interested in SEO; so I’ll probably start following you on Google Reader…

I think what you need to take into account is that the minds that come from Twitter are used to seeing 140 character posts, when you are dealing with this type of audience it is truly hit or miss. Personally, I clicked your link via twitter, and the only thing that kept me on the page longer than 1 minute was this post. Had there not been this post, i would have exited just like the rest… I don’t mean to sound patronizing but I think alot of that has to do with web design. Maybe you should look into changing up the design to keep people around a bit longer, simply from a design point of view.

  9. Twitter is a great tool for building
    relationships with people

Nice work sendout cards. I usually shy away from social networking sites but I will give twitter a try. Any recommendations I should follow?

    Yes,
Bounce rate is very high(98%) so twitter gives more traffic but with relevant users it will give less bounce rate…I also tried and compare with digg..digg gives traffic when u are on the 1st page only otherwise not…but in case of twitter that is not the case…
