A recent patent application from Google describes the way they make use of previous query for influencing the advertisements that pop up during a search.
The patent describes the ways in which the search engine decides the relation between a current and previous query. This is used to determine whether they should encourage ads that support both queries.
The patent clearly describes the way they expand the search query for matching with various advertising keywords. This happens when there is no previous query from the searcher. In such a case, the search engine will look for related words and will perform query broadening.
Ads are shown mostly based on the words which relates to the particular query. This is obtained through getting information through clustering tools and various other systems.
This patent describes how search results could be expanded through a web search. This indicates the instance during which there are no results for any query entered by the user. Google will also look at various overlapping words in those queries which happened during the search, for displaying results to users. Previous queries in this way will relate to the sponsored links which are highlighted on the top of the pages which are shown as results.

Google is trying to expand the language search. The recent patent from the search engine giant describes the expanded language search engine. This will enable us to search for those pages in various other languages which could be done through the translation of the queries searched with.
This patent is expected to help users to receive various additional results in the user’s language. Users can also search for anything in their traditional language. The search engine will look for results, when these are specified by the searcher. They also return such results in other languages, based on various other factors including the popularity of the language, attributes of the users etc. Search history of the users, subject matter of a query and its relevance, the character type given as input by the user etc will also be considered when displaying results in languages for the users.
The language setting of the browser, search engine domain, user input etc all will be considered by the search engine for determining whether results have to be displayed in other languages. The search engine has to be set up to expand various languages used in selecting the results. This patent is expected to help Google to bring a large number of users.

A recent patent from Yahoo describes in detail how people or users can help in the crawling of web pages. This patent is known as the automatically fetching patent and will come up with details of how a user or site interaction could be used to help the search engine crawling program.
The activities which are involved and addressed include the webmaster training the crawler of how to find out the pages which are indexed in their website. A human reviewer is teaching the crawler of how to find out the pages. The content subscriber will show the crawling program, the information that would be subscribed to and updates will be sending about it.
As per this patent, the search engine will allow people to teach the web crawling program. This will help in the navigation of pages of the website. This will be particularly more useful in accessing web pages which have java script links and those pages which are accessible only through various selections. Pages which are accessible through inputting text into forms can also be navigated with the help of this patent implementation.
The patent find application when search engines find difficulties in crawling pages which could be due to java script links.

Usually when you search for results using queries with the help of search engines, you will get details including web pages and URL links.
A recent patent application from Microsoft describes how images could be displayed as web pages to the searchers, when search results are being shown. This patent application also considers how images could be displayed to the users, if there is more than one image in a single page.
The search engine will determine the importance of each image in the website using automated process. Based on the features of the image, the dominance will be evaluated. If different images have same dominance, one that is more relevant to the query will be considered for display. The features generally considered include the size of the image, the location of the web page etc.
For this patent, Microsoft explored different image level features as well as page level features. This even included the features from a website level. Thus, images will help in determining the page rank by the search engines. As a result, this will change the interests of website users, especially search engine users when using Microsoft search engine patent in getting images for their searches.

Duplicate content in various web pages provide a serious threat to search engines. Search engines will normally have to face a serious challenging question on which pages have to be shown as search results to users. They don’t want to show more than one web pages with same content to the users.
It is here that a new patent from Google has come to help content creators. This will help creators to identify if their content is already present in the internet in some other web pages. This patent is being designed with the help of contents being stored in specific system. When user submits content, Google will look for similar and matching contents. If any such are present in their store, this will be intimated to the users.
The patent by Google will provide details to users on where to search for duplicate content similar to their content. This will help users to check if their content is being used in some other places without authorization. Though there are services like copyscape, this will not consider video and audio images when checking for duplicate data. It is here that this patent by the search engine giant will gain high importance. This will also help to find out duplicate data that are being copied from offline sources as well.

Search engines care much about the presence of spam in their search results. SEO optimization cares a lot about technical as well as informational base for the websites so that users will get all relevant information and data from the search engines. Microsoft has come up with a recent patent application stating the classification system that helps search engines in working with the spam. This will help the search engines to optimize those results which are not useful for the particular queries. This system normally works on the basis of the comparing features which will search queries and other features of the web pages. In fact, this helps to rank the pages better for the queries as well.
When the pages that is more relevant for the search is displayed, those pages which are spam are less likely to be displayed. The patent describes that, there are various reasons for keeping from displaying the spam pages along with the web page results of searches. The most important reason is that when the spam pages increase, users might switch to other search engines. Another reason is that websites might start using spamming techniques to increase their ratings over the spam pages.

When working with Google, you might have noted that it is possible to use Google as a country specific browser rather than a global one. When the searchers perform searching from different countries, for the same query word, the results displayed to the users will be different.
A recent patent granted to Google shows that search engine tries to associate web pages from various country locations with the queries made from those areas. The method will effectively bias the information in a way that results will be based upon the preferred country location of the searcher.
The preferred country in this context could be the country in which the searcher resides or a country which he is interested in or acceptable for him. Google has always tried to follow this and they have been using latest techniques and methods to develop their theory of working with this patent.
Google uses a search biaser tool which will help the search engine in determining the areas which are of interest to the searcher. The location of the searcher based up on the country location ie. IP address will be used for the working of this tool. The use of log files obtained from the Google toolbar will also help the search engine in displaying information through this country preference method.

Google has always been trying to get something different that makes browsing a different experience with their engine. A recent update from their side is the patent the company had obtained on universal search.
As per the new patent, visitors will be able to get search results coming from different categories. This includes various areas such as news, images, ads and web pages, when they type the word for searching.
There are various advantages of this universal search concept. The most important one is the improved search experience felt by the searchers. They need not have to worry about obtaining results from various categories.
Before the launch of this patent, users continued to use the default search results, without using the category tab provided by the search engine. This has always limited the chances provided by the company for the users.
In this new concept, Google maintains different databases for various categories. When a query word comes, the engine searches for relevant information in each of the databases. This will be ranked. This rank is then used for comparison to know the relevance of the information. Finally the data will be shown back to the users. Through such an advanced indexing, users will be able to get details from the most relevant categories, rather than looking for this in the results displayed

Visions based document segmentation is a new patent obtained by Microsoft. The web pages have so much diversity in topics including content, links, labels and ads that search engines will find it really difficult to index and get the pages for the searchers.
This patent considers breaking down the web pages into a number of different blocks having meaning. This is done on the basis of how we see the page. These sections are identified as portions of the page with varying meanings and this might be completely unrelated to one another.
The existence of the blocks will be helpful to the search engine when they look for pages and will decide on the indexing based on the content found in that page. This will help the searchers to get more information on what they were looking for.
The page as per the patent is broken into visual blocks and the differences in the page sections are found out. This is used to create the visual separations between the sections. These blocks and the separators are used to create a content structure for that page. The pages are not directly ranked, but the sections and the blocks of the pages are used for ranking so that, it is easier to find out the right information for the searchers.

Google tries to look into the change of content in the web pages and how this affects the page rank of the corresponding pages.
This is based on the fact that websites get updated frequently. There can be addition of products or information in websites and blogs. There are changes that occur on a regular basis and those changes have high relevance in the page rank.
Google is using the patent for historical data to update on the changes happening in the websites. This has a direct impact on the click through rate as well as the link changes in the web pages. The patent also concentrates on the keywords that affect those pages. Hence the historical ranking factors of Google will be affected with the updates happening in various web pages.
There are cases when the pages that has content recently changed will be considered more acceptable than those pages that has not been updated anywhere in the recent past. In such cases, Google will have to keep track of the changes that are occurring for the queries that are more frequent. This is in fact the relevance of the historical patent for data content for any changes by Google.
