Universal search patent for Google

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Google has always been trying to get something different that makes browsing a different experience with their engine. A recent update from their side is the patent the company had obtained on universal search.

As per the new patent, visitors will be able to get search results coming from different categories. This includes various areas such as news, images, ads and web pages, when they type the word for searching.

There are various advantages of this universal search concept. The most important one is the improved search experience felt by the searchers. They need not have to worry about obtaining results from various categories.

Before the launch of this patent, users continued to use the default search results, without using the category tab provided by the search engine. This has always limited the chances provided by the company for the users.

In this new concept, Google maintains different databases for various categories. When a query word comes, the engine searches for relevant information in each of the databases. This will be ranked. This rank is then used for comparison to know the relevance of the information. Finally the data will be shown back to the users. Through such an advanced indexing, users will be able to get details from the most relevant categories, rather than looking for this in the results displayed

SEO using categories for the search

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

The usual way of fetching the web pages for you suggest a unique way of searching the database for the keywords users have entered.  Searching by categories bring a lot of difference as it fetches the necessary the pages in the context of the query.

When a query is passed by the user, search engine assigns a special category to the query. Since the context in which the query has passed by the user is extremely difficult to figure out, search engine optimization techniques are refined to get the best possible search result.

By associating a category to the user typed query, it becomes much easier to identify the context. Search engine maintains a hierarchy of categories to associate user typed query. This preliminary hierarchy of category is pretty general in nature and this category is sub divided into many other categories that directs to the best possible exact context of the user desired search result. Say for example, preliminary category can include sports, entertainment, science etc, and hierarchy of sub categories can accommodate more specific areas like music, football, chemistry etc.

Hence the more refined technique which discussed very recently by experts greatly helps the searchers, writers or publishers to fetch more exact data and prepare categorized articles etc.

Associating query terms with categories

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Whenever you search for particular keywords in search engines, the search engine will look for related articles in the databases. This will be brought back to the users after the query is complete.

A more advanced version is to associate categories with the search terms. This will bring you more additional results which are rich in content. Along with this, you will be able to see more information on the related topic. The main advantage of using categories is that, in particular cases when the search results for a particular keyword is less, this will broaden the search. When there are too many results, you will find that the results will appear more focused to assist users, when using categories.

When this categorization works, usually the search term will be divided to check for whether they have been queried before. If it is an already queried term, the search will be simplified by assigning the already available category to this query term.

Omgili is the shining star on a web 2.0 search engine sky

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Every major search engine uses an automated approach for indexing the net and serving relevant content- that’s a given. But what hundreds of young upstarts are trying to do is look for innovative ways to include human input into the equation. Omgili offers an interesting and unique mix of automated approach and the human factor.

Omgili sends out an automated crawler to index the web like any other search engine would. But that’s where similarities end; Omgili goes a step further and tries to specialize its results. It scans millions of online discussion boards, forums and similar discussion-based resources from all over the world. To see the result of this in action, search for, say, a certain brand of digital camera on Google and Omgili. On top of Google’s result page, predictably, will be the manufacturer’s page for that product; But here’s the surprise, Omgili will fill your page with links to various online discussions about that particular camera, helping you find out what other real people thought about this product rather than give you the device’s specs.

This young search engine includes a number of nifty features aimed at increasing its usefulness as a search tool. Omgili Search Aid is a feature that lets a user search within the search queries performed by other users. Product Reviews is targeted exclusively at serving information from product review sites. Omgili Buzz displays the top topics at that point of time in various categories such as news, videos, movies etc… And yet another feature, Google@Omgili, empowers a user to do a simultaneous search on both search engines.

If you are interested in finding out about what other people are saying about topics that interest you, Omgili might be the tool you have been looking for. It is far from perfect, but it certainly shows the direction that the next generation of “Specialized” search engines must take.
