Search Engine Optimization Vs Social Media Optimization
->
Sites such as You-tube, Digg, Stumbleupon and Propeller have become a major marketing tool and is looking at becoming the next generation of online marketing.
Social Media Optimization (SMO) has the power to bring in large amounts of targetted niche traffic both very quickly and on a long term basis, unlike tradittional SEO which is more of a steady traffic load. Weighing out both SEO and SMO both have there positive effects and both go hand in hand, but as companies now are looking for quick turnaround times SMO is a great way to achieve that while slowly build up the position of the SERP ranking to also achieve the desired keyword positions in the major search engines. Here we will compare the benefits of both Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Optimization.
Benefits of Seo:
- Targetted Traffic
- Long term SERP’s Positions and traffic
- Cost Effective
- Authority Status
- Excellent Return on Investment
Benefits of SMO
- Heavy Traffic very quickly
- Advertising directly to prospective clients
- Great backlinks
- Word of mouth effectiveness SMO brings
- Share your content with video and audio
As you can see both have equal benefits, although some people believe SMO is better than SEO and vice versa - we feel that both optmization methods cannot be compared to each other as if both done correctly will fit like a needle and thread. For example you submit a story to Digg, your story gets very popular beinging in floods of traffic in the short term, but it then has a knock on effect with webmasters and blogs linking back to that popular story thus giving a nice selection of natural backlinks which the search engines love.
SEO and SMO will be around for years to come and both will play there part in making a site successful so instead of compaing them we should join them to create one SEOMS.
Happy Optimizing

Digg is the best in terms of SMO and getting backlinks. Mister Wong and Del.iciou.us are also very good for backlinks. Here’s a few more sites to add to the social networking list: Twitter, Pownce, Current, Sphinn, Metafilter, Jaiku…the list goes on!

Social media, has becomes increasingly important to a Web site’s success and its visibility in search engines. It can be used side by side to drive traffic. The blog posts, articles and comments can reveal imp. information about a company and it’s products. And search engine’s are going to love this as they are always looking for content.

Good read. SMO has a much faster effect than SEO efforts. In some niches it also has a greater effect.

Yeah i do agree both are best if they are combined together and done effectively.
The real fact that SMO rules but there are many other factors - SPAM so need to look on that too.
But i would agree that SMO saves time + money + gets traffic at the same time which is really needed. I would be coming up with a whole list of Resources on SMO soon so get on with my blog site to catch up the SOCIAL in ACTION

SEO and SMO should not go against each other. They should go hand-in-hand for a guaranteed volume of traffic and returns of investment. We can’t let them clash but we can compare them. The SMO has an advantage of getting raw opinions from your customers, so it’s interactive. SEO focuses on your website visibility and page rank, while SMO focuses on search engine visibility, page rank and customers’ words on your product.
