Google Guessing Too Much

fortune

As Google tried to make advancements in its search results, they seem to have formulated a lot of algorithms that predicts user behavior. We have tackled the use of eye-tracking studies before. But now this phenomenon seems to be a problem in some cases.

A thread in Webmasterworld discussed this. As indicated, Google had this “we-guessed-your-intention” approach where they simply predict that a particular search result is what the user wants when in reality it is not. This can pose more problems than solutions to search results. For example, some people may search for the word googlesearch (without space) but Google will return results with the space. This is with its assumption that a space is more reasonable for the searcher’s intentions.

On the bright side, this may mean good news to SEOs. I think this can be applicable to domains. There have been some people who have indicated the use of hyphens in domains to be able to separate keywords. However, with Google’s algorithm, it reads the words separately.

Also, the more Google predicts the user behaviors, the more SEOs can. So long as they figure out Google’s algorithm they will not haveĀ  a hard time predicting what the user wants. In this regard, it works positively.

So is Google guessing too much? I don’t think so. There are only a few people who will type googlesearch and hope to receive results without the space. After all, there’s still the + operator for people with these intentions. They simply have to append + to googlesearch (+googlesearch) and they will get the search results they desire. I think things will go worse if the recent search algorithm of Google is altered. Imagine having the search engines read things as they are. Yes, it may be beneficial for some but not for the majority.
