personalized-search

Google has recently granted a patent where in they describe the method by which they manage to change the orders of the pages that are displayed to the users. This is mainly based on the language preference as well as the location of the searcher.

According to this patent, Google will change the search results based on the country and the language preferred by the searcher. A recent patent in this context also consider the populations in which the searcher will be a part of. This will be based on the user behavior of the populations. This is through the analysis of pages which will be clicked by the members of those populations when a search result is being displayed to the users.

Depending on this population, a ranking is given to the articles and the articles are displayed to the users based on that ranking. Algorithms and data associated with this population will be used when determining this population information from the web pages.

When a searcher performs a search, the search engine retrieves the listing of pages according to the ranking. Once this is done, search engine will look for any population flag associated with the user. If this is found, the search engine will rearrange the pages according to that.

Yahoo CEO stepping out

Friday, November 28th, 2008

The latest news from search engine Yahoo is the stepping down of Jerry Yang from the position of Chief Executive Officer. This is not going to make Yahoo a CEO- less company. Yang will continue to be in the position of CEO until a successor is ready to replace him.
Yahoo has already started searching for a new CEO. Yang became the CEO of the company as per the decisions of the board and had become a crucial part of the transformation of the company. Once a new CEO is selected, Yang will come back to the position of the Chief Yahoo. He will continue as one of the members of the board of Directors.
In the midst of various challenges and distractions, Jerry Yang managed to reposition Yahoo on the open platform model. He had also taken a crucial role in the alignment of costs and revenues. The executive board of Yahoo had expressed their gratitude to Yang for his service as CEO for over 18 months. At the same time, they consider time has come for the new CEO to take the company to newer levels, while Yang will cooperate with the company as a key member of the executive board and to be involved in the activities of Yahoo and its growth.

Sphinn What The Hell is Going on?

Monday, November 24th, 2008

So today I visited sphinn as usual, just to check on whats hot and whats not. I go to the Homepage and see this:

This is only a snippet, all together there were 8 stories from this guy (By the way nothing against the person in question) and to be honest in my opinion half of these do not deserve to be front page.

This is why user generated sites are getting such a bad name, I am writing this post to make Sphinn aware of this problem. I do not want to see news that I personally feel does not deserve to be on the homepage. Please do not turn into Digg!

Lets get some moderation and control going with the site, do not vote on the person (its not a talent competition!) vote on great search stories.

Google helping to find out duplicate data

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Duplicate content in various web pages provide a serious threat to search engines. Search engines will normally have to face a serious challenging question on which pages have to be shown as search results to users. They don’t want to show more than one web pages with same content to the users.

It is here that a new patent from Google has come to help content creators. This will help creators to identify if their content is already present in the internet in some other web pages. This patent is being designed with the help of contents being stored in specific system. When user submits content, Google will look for similar and matching contents. If any such are present in their store, this will be intimated to the users.

The patent by Google will provide details to users on where to search for duplicate content similar to their content. This will help users to check if their content is being used in some other places without authorization. Though there are services like copyscape, this will not consider video and audio images when checking for duplicate data. It is here that this patent by the search engine giant will gain high importance. This will also help to find out duplicate data that are being copied from offline sources as well.

Is it The End to SEO as we Know It With Google Search Wiki?

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Google have chucked a spanner in the works for all SEO’s or have they really? Lets take a look. For those of you who do not know what search wiki is please see below for a snippet from Google

Today we’re launching SearchWiki, a way for you to customize search by re-ranking, deleting, adding, and commenting on search results. With just a single click you can move the results you like to the top or add a new site. You can also write notes attached to a particular site and remove results that you don’t feel belong. These modifications will be shown to you every time you do the same search in the future. SearchWiki is available to signed-in Google users. We store your changes in your Google Account. If you are wondering if you are signed in, you can always check by noting if your username appears in the upper right-hand side of the page.

So will this effect how we perceive SEO? Well not really, as Googles new search wiki is only based on a users specified preference. So whatever the user decides to vote up or delete will only be displayed in their personal account. But what I am interested in is how this will actually develop in say a year from now. What is there to say that Google will in someway add this to their algo? So they look at which sites will be getting the most votes and give them a boost? Well that would be hugely prone to abuse and I believe if Google did to something like this, they would leave the door wide open for a new search engine to replace them.

But no doubt they will be using this data for a purpose, who knows yet but I am certain the big G has more suprises around the corner as they look to advance search into the next generation.

Take a look at the video below for an indepth video

Patent to classify spam pages by search engines

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Search engines care much about the presence of spam in their search results. SEO optimization cares a lot about technical as well as informational base for the websites so that users will get all relevant information and data from the search engines. Microsoft has come up with a recent patent application stating the classification system that helps search engines in working with the spam. This will help the search engines to optimize those results which are not useful for the particular queries. This system normally works on the basis of the comparing features which will search queries and other features of the web pages. In fact, this helps to rank the pages better for the queries as well.

When the pages that is more relevant for the search is displayed, those pages which are spam are less likely to be displayed. The patent describes that, there are various reasons for keeping from displaying the spam pages along with the web page results of searches. The most important reason is that when the spam pages increase, users might switch to other search engines. Another reason is that websites might start using spamming techniques to increase their ratings over the spam pages.

Use of pogosticking by search engines

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

When a searcher bounces back between the search results and the pages displayed as search results for queries, this is referred to as search pogosticking. This will be useful for the display of results in the future for the same query. The search engine will effectively keep track of these activities in the log files or in the search toolbar. This information will be later used as a part of re-ranking the web pages while displaying results for the same search word.

Yahoo, in a recent patent application has mentioned what information will be saved by the search engine, when the searchers click on the search results. They have mentioned that pogo sticking information will be used along with the ranking system used by Yahoo for various searches.

Most searchers will have the tendency to look for those links which seem to be attractive enough for them, after they get the search results displayed in front of them. This will in fact inspire them to visit the page. This pogo sticking and the use of the relevant information to provide better search results will of course be helpful for the searchers, when they rely on search engines more and more.

Google’s patent on changing rankings

Monday, November 17th, 2008

When working with Google, you might have noted that it is possible to use Google as a country specific browser rather than a global one. When the searchers perform searching from different countries, for the same query word, the results displayed to the users will be different.

A recent patent granted to Google shows that search engine tries to associate web pages from various country locations with the queries made from those areas. The method will effectively bias the information in a way that results will be based upon the preferred country location of the searcher.

The preferred country in this context could be the country in which the searcher resides or a country which he is interested in or acceptable for him. Google has always tried to follow this and they have been using latest techniques and methods to develop their theory of working with this patent.

Google uses a search biaser tool which will help the search engine in determining the areas which are of interest to the searcher. The location of the searcher based up on the country location ie. IP address will be used for the working of this tool. The use of log files obtained from the Google toolbar will also help the search engine in displaying information through this country preference method.

Google to help CDC

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Google has mentioned that with the support and help of user queries connected with flu symptoms, they will be able to predict the trends, ascending or descending, of the diseases, throughout USA. The wing of Google developed for this will give users a daily update of the trends of flu, through daily estimates of the cases.

GFT will be collecting the details directly from the users. The main intension of creating GFT was that, sick people will be depending on internet as a means of knowing more about the disease, as compared to normal people. Hence any outbreak will be immediately reported by GFT, thereby helping CDC to record and process data further. This will be really helpful for hospitals to prepare in such cases of a large influx of patients.

When this service could be extended to other diseases also, this could largely benefit as an advanced tool in knowing the real trend and statistics collected from real time environment. The technology used by Google for this could easily be extended to other medical conditions, thereby making it able to prevent the spreading of various other diseases. Most of the diseases will hence be predicted by this method in the first place, since tracking using this technology and methods are more effective and useful.

Google joined hands with DRSG

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Google has always been into environment friendly works and they have received wide appreciation from their customers for this. A new update from Google is the joining of Google with the Demand Response and Smart Grid Coalition. This association is for promoting the monitoring of the consumption of electricity in power as well as end user’s houses.

There are various companies in DRSG and all the companies which are a part of this organization are aiming at promoting and supporting energy efficiency. The main focus of Google is to come up with efforts to bring up a smart power grid which will fuel appliances. DRSG also pay attention to the issues connected with demand response. This will result in the development of software which will regulate and reduce the energy consumption on various offices and houses, even during peak time.

Google is into this positive side of DRSG and this is mainly helpful when this will increase the interests of other companies to join this group as well. This will result in the development of various gadgets and software which could help in effective monitoring as well as reduction of the consumption of energy. This is expected to have a great impact on the future of available energy resources as well.
