Cloud storage for webmasters

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The introduction of new cloud storage from Parascale is latest news in the webmaster field. The data as per this is not kept on the physical devices; instead internet is used to store the details.

Company has already announced the storage of data on a high security system. The central control servers with metadata only have access to the network nodes. There is no human interference in the network in a virtual mode. Operations can be performed without the need for a peer confirmation.

Cloud can be upgraded according to the requirements of the clients. The software from parascale can be used to bring together the servers from various vendors together.

Only a limited number of clients are allowed access for this storage. The data can be loaded on Linux as well as Windows server, including old servers as well.

The cost of having this cloud storage is very less and there is no additional cost for the bandwidth provided for customers. This will make it convenient for the clients as compared to their competitors using other modes of storage facilities. Service providers can go for this storage without having to go for technology changes to have this storage facility with them.

Microsoft going for document segmentation based on vision

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Visions based document segmentation is a new patent obtained by Microsoft. The web pages have so much diversity in topics including content, links, labels and ads that search engines will find it really difficult to index and get the pages for the searchers.

This patent considers breaking down the web pages into a number of different blocks having meaning. This is done on the basis of how we see the page. These sections are identified as portions of the page with varying meanings and this might be completely unrelated to one another.

The existence of the blocks will be helpful to the search engine when they look for pages and will decide on the indexing based on the content found in that page. This will help the searchers to get more information on what they were looking for.

The page as per the patent is broken into visual blocks and the differences in the page sections are found out. This is used to create the visual separations between the sections. These blocks and the separators are used to create a content structure for that page. The pages are not directly ranked, but the sections and the blocks of the pages are used for ranking so that, it is easier to find out the right information for the searchers.

People unaware of social networking

Friday, September 26th, 2008

When search engines are trying to improve their customer base, a recent study from the webmaster forums showed that most of the people have no proper knowledge about social networking. When this is considered as a world of social networking, the surveys conducted among the people of various countries showed that, they even didn’t know what a social networking site was, though they were aware of email and internet.

Some of the people were extremely cautious of the social networking site and used some of the leading provided by the webmaster giants. At the same time, many had started losing interest in the SEO marketing and social networking. They were interested in the social networking in the past, but gradually started losing interest in the same.

The recent news is a shock to the SEO world when the people show least attraction to social marketing.  The reasons from various countries are different. Some people have no access to computers, while others can’t get an internet connection. Yet there are some countries where people don’t show much attention to what is happening in the world of seo marketing.  The only assurance here is that, there is a good percentage looking forward to the world of social networking with curiosity to know the updates there.

Google’s patent for historical data content update

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Google tries to look into the change of content in the web pages and how this affects the page rank of the corresponding pages.

This is based on the fact that websites get updated frequently. There can be addition of products or information in websites and blogs. There are changes that occur on a regular basis and those changes have high relevance in the page rank.

Google is using the patent for historical data to update on the changes happening in the websites. This has a direct impact on the click through rate as well as the link changes in the web pages. The patent also concentrates on the keywords that affect those pages. Hence the historical ranking factors of Google will be affected with the updates happening in various web pages.

There are cases when the pages that has content recently changed will be considered more acceptable than those pages that has not been updated anywhere in the recent past. In such cases, Google will have to keep track of the changes that are occurring for the queries that are more frequent. This is in fact the relevance of the historical patent for data content for any changes by Google.

Search engine going to give related information on queries

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Search engines are trying to introduce more information about a particular keyword query. Along with displaying results connected to a particular keyword, the search engine will also display information about people, places and other things related to that word.

When searching for a song for instance, the search engine will also display information about the singer, the album etc. in such a query, information about the entry will be displayed and the search engine will take all phrases and will look for more information about that word. Different rules will be mixed to provide such detailed information. Thus, even if the information is not directly related to the word, but can be of interest to the query, it will also be given as a part of this search.

A metadata of the name entity will also be used to provide details regarding the name entry you have given for a search. The search will be concentrated on relevant key terms as well as phrases associated with a query word.

This will make a search engine query more informative as well as interesting to the searcher. From the perspective of the search engine, this will be a chance for them to develop their customer base as well.

Yahoo and hackers

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Yahoo has done what was expected of it. They have obviously felt the heat on quite a few avenues of operation of late and outright bids to buy them out has certainly raised questions. The latest announcement from Yahoo is their alliance with 300 hackers to revamp their system and look at things in new light. This system is incredibly bright. It adds prospects of high converting sales processes and adds automation to it. It discards the use of traditional techniques of sales marketing like presentations or phone calls or attendance at meetings etc. that are not working and instead concentrates on new coding and innovative techniques instead.

Such an attempt is intended to set the pace and do everything right for Yahoo to reclaim its position and popularity that seems to be questioned. The system is being undertaken to give you predictable results. It makes absolutely no difference if you are a beginner or an experienced Yahoo user, this system, though fairly new, has ensured time and again that it gives results. The hackers have always been there but no one seems to talk about them. The Yahoo hackers approach is popularising the whole human element completely by collaborating mainstream and those behind the scenes.

Google going to reduce IP retention time

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Google in a recent blog from their office has declared that, they are going to anonymize the IP of the logs in their search engine servers in 9 months. This has been an update on the earlier declaration of the retention period of 18 months.

This change has been made by the company in an attempt to protect the data and privacy of the users. The search engine giant has been closely researching this and has even accepted a request to keep a link for privacy policy on their home pages.

The main concern of the Google engineers have been for how to find out a way in which they can reduce the loss of data quality in the logs and at the same time, bring down the retention period of the IPs. This data is being used by the company to improve the search results and conduct the advertisement campaigns based on the location details as well as language preferences of their users.

Even when the methods for anonymization will have to face changes, it will be successful in bringing down the retention period. So, they have been able to devise methods that preserve the data utility and anonymize the IP address as well.

Google using phrase based indexing

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Google has obtained the patent for the phrase based indexing. This will explore the various documents present in the internet and will find out the frequency with which the same phrase is appearing on the same documents. This will be marked as related by the search engine.

Once this kind of relation marking is done with, clustering will be used to take a decision about the pages that are to be shown in the search results. This will be based on the order of the phrases included in a query by the search engine. It will also depend on the phrases which are closely connected to those particular phrases which are being queried.

So, the order of the pages and the results to be shown in that particular order can be decided using clustering. The system actually looks for the count of the documents which have related phrases, while this clustering is being made use of.

As a result of this kind of searching, we will be looking for the most popular web pages. In fact, the most popular will be returned first and this will also take into consideration, the size of the clusters which are being referred to.

Advertisers against Google-Yahoo partnership

Friday, September 19th, 2008

The association of advertisers is very much worried about the going to be partnership between Google and Yahoo. They have already given their concerns and anxieties against this, in public.

The most important matter that troubles them is the fact that, out of this partnership, the 90% of advertisement business will be in the hands of Yahoo and Google. They are afraid of the fact that, this will make the search engine market competition unhealthy. As per this partnership, they fears that, the chances of providing options to both advertisers and customers. This will slowly reduce the advertising quality. The advertisers will have to pay high rates for getting good quality advertisements.

As per this partnership, Google will allow the display of search results along with that obtained through Yahoo. Advertisers will have to struggle to get quality search engine advertising and marketing, once this is made possible. Slowly, the whole of search engine marketing will decline as a result of this.

Fearing this, they have already started questioning this partitioning and have started submitting complaints and taking actions to prevent this from happening.

Along with the various associations of advertisers, Microsoft also has raised their concern about this partnership business.

Google reducing the retention period

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Google has recently made a declaration that, they will be anonymizing the IPs of the sever search logs, after a period of nine months, instead of the 18 months. Google considers that they are the first search engine to come up with a retention period of around 18 months. Now, they have again proven that, they work for the customers by bringing down the value to around 9 months. As per this, we can consider that Google has great commitment to their users and so they are trying to protect the data and privacy of their users.

When they have concentrated on reducing the retention period, Google has also tried their level best to limit the time of loss of data quality in their logs. This data is used for providing better search results to the customers. Data can better be given based on location and language preferences.

Google has given maximum importance to privacy, even when employing these methods. When innovation, security and privacy cannot be taken along together, Google has already proved that, they will be ensuring all the three to their customers.

The engineers working with Google is working hard to make this dream come true for helping their users and making them happy.
