Friday, May 30th, 2008

Everyone venturing into the world of internet via their websites want to traverse through its network spreading their essence. Hence each and every one of them are desirous in setting up the websites at a higher pedestral on various search engines possessing higher page rank thus enabling them to appear on the very first page of every conducted search. Being aware of ways that help enhance the chances for websites to procure a higher rank can be a sure way to succeed in one’s cherished ambition. Affiliate marketing is one such double edged sword that benefits both the webmaster as well as the branded franchiser or advertiser.

Affiliate marketing through web promotes the products and services of the partner company or business utilizing properly tuned advertisements on various websites of the affiliate. The affiliate is thus solely responsible for attracting and capitalizing on customer base who are opting for the advertised brand. The brand seller compensates affiliates according to the proportion of customers that it directs towards its partner. Thus it entrusts upon the shoulders of the affiliate the responsibility to have modern, techno-savvy and content enriched websites with a reasonable amount of average traffic that enable brands to approach them for placement of their advertisements to utilize the multi-channel marketing endeavor to optimize conversion . Then who qualifies to become an affiliate and why?

Websites who on the one hand have tried and tested various methods for optimization and link building and seemingly exhausted themselves in propelling their page ranks beyond the initial notches are the ideal entities on the threshold to becoming affiliates. It may or may not always be due to the compensation packages provided by the branded companies that websites with mediocre page ranks opt for affiliation to spiral their hit count and earn remarkable revenues in various terms. It may just be to fulfill the dream of enchanting the masses with their mesmerizing flashes and luring propositions by delving into their bowls to gain immensely that websites reach out to become affiliates.

Email to boost SERP

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

When a Keyword enriched Title, META tag, highly targeted Content or even an incredible domain name fails to create a desired impact in SERP, people find out different off-site optimization techniques, email marketing is one such way, which can earn you a real filter willing visitors to your website to boost up your SERP, keeping along with the age old philosophy – one hit counts works as a positive vote.

Today’s SEO consultant leaves no stone unturned to get the email database, but the problem becomes authentication, SPAM filtration and prohibited email-ids. The trend of sending a newsletter is not new, but to optimize the newsletter to the hilt is the need of the hour. Mostly emails consist of information, which interests commners. Lets take an example, a free report of his website’s performance make him always inquisitive. A product survey or a free participation in a prize draw or even a phenomenal discount on renowned products/ brands mostly lure the visitor. Once the user reads an email, there should be a link, which will provoke them to click on and the landing page should be equally interesting, which ensures the retention. The
email should communicate several messages, which will attract them to click back.

As SPAM and authentication are highly inter-dependant, one has to take up the enormous potential of technology to accomplish both. An email subscriber can enter anything and everything to his heart’s content in the subscriber’s field. The preliminary checking is done by some common tactics like embedding of the symbol @ in the Id, but a reverse email, where the user has to click a link to conform, will save you from an ashen face. An unsubscribe link at the end of each email can save you from legal hassles. Programs will allow you to send the mass emailing by iteration methods, which is capable of escaping the red eyes of popular emails like hotmail, rediff, yahoo or gmail. To doubly ensure, you can request the user to check his spam/ junk folder in the welcome email, send immediately after the registration.

Emancipation from the cherished tradition of using newsletter or email, focus on earning an inbound traffic. The success lies on the ability of exciting the user’s taste or choice with the glittering email inlaid with efficient programming techniques, that can surely convert them to visitors of your website.

Local and Multilingual make process complicated

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

The search engines like Google have been continuously harping on local searches, which allow them to be more interactive and pertinent to the visitors. If we closely follow google.com gets automatically redirected to Google.co.in, when a search is performed from the country India. Google simply reads the IP address and finds the region of the user to generate a locale result set.

This localization of search is done typically by clustered data and web pages, which Google store in its database. It’s easier said than done. The complexity arises when the webmaster is to optimize the website. Washington is the name of a state as well as a city. There are several departmental stores which embeds the name Washington in one way or the other. You may find even a casino named as Washington! So, the obvious question which Washington should get the priority when it is searched in Google? Google has partially simplified this by implementing the logic that it will display result as per the IP address, which means it finds the IP address which is local to Washington city, it will prioritize the local set of results. The problem comes, when the search action is performed from an unbiased area, say India. As per rule, Google abides by the ranking system and SERP rules of all the websites which match Washington. So, in one statement, local gets the preference followed by the generic ones, in case both are available, else the search becomes generic.

The multi-lingual system has made the situation even worse. Even today, every word of different languages can not be completed translated and even Google or any other search engine in that context could not enrich their vocabulary up to that desired level, so that everything gets properly translated. Moreover most of the local languages have got different versions and set of vocabularies. If a webmaster needs to consider so many complexities, he will be completely lost. We have got a very generic solution for you.

If you want your website should get a preference as per local searches, speak of the place properly, where you are located at. If you use different languages, go for generic translation. Try to avoid the lesser used versions or cryptic words while translating to other languages. Again follow basic rules of SEO. Remember even if your website is localized, you launch the website for the world at large.

Files of utter importance – robots.txt and .htaccess

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

The unimaginably growing complexity of web design and its related activities have necessitated the proper usage of two files namely robots.txt and .htaccess.

To start from the beginning let us say that both the files can be created using any text editor such as notepad and both of them must be placed in the root folder of your web server which implies that whenever your are opening the file system of your host, these two files must be visible to you. Please note that some web servers prefer to keep the .htacces file hidden. BUT search engine crawlers and spiders can easily trace them.

Let us now try to define the individual purpose. Robots.txt basically controls the movement of the robots, sent by the search engines, inside the existing file system of your web server. So, if you want some prohibitions, you can mention it in robots.txt. You can even customize the robots.txt according to your needs. On the other hand .htaccess file primarily serves the purpose of URL redirection and module rewrite.

Let us take an example: while revamping your website, you want to omit some of your old pages, which had been already crawled by the search engines. Now, such sudden omissions of web pages, which have been already crawled, casts a tremendous negative impact and they treat it as unfounded tagging the infamous URL Not found. The best way is to redirect the old pages intelligently to the existing pages, so that crawlers don’t fall in a soup, instead they find a landing platform, wherein they also redirect the visitors.

Module Rewrite has gained importance when people have started noticing that search engines prefer user friendly URLs instead of automated URLs generated by several programs. This is worth mentioning that even popular software packages like PHPLd and WordPress also have kept provision for module rewritten URLs to earn you the additional advantage of generating Search Engine friendly URLs.

It is to be mentioned that the presence of either robots.txt or .htaccess is mandatory in your web server, but it gives you a complete control over the web server and moreover you can dictate the crawlers and spiders in your own way.

SERP – too unpredictable

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Search Engine Results Position or SERP in short has become too vulnerable in the recent past and any constant observer can notice the changes very easily. SERP has never been completely predictable even in the past, but off late it has created a lot flurry and hence is turning things topsy-turvy. While trying to scrutinize the major contributors in Google ranking one finds the major contributors in SERP are Link building, Keyword density, Internal Linking, back links and image links. There are some other factors as well, though NOT that significant enough as it may be noted that one has to play the optimum balance between all these factors.

If a site has a good amount of back links, which is basically anchor based, but internal linking is significantly less, then the chances of scoring high rank comes down. Likewise, if keyword density comes down below 1%, then perhaps search engine does not bother much about your pages.

Our common perception is that if a website has got a reasonable number of links it has a fair chance of holding the higher rung. Having studied some sites, which rank higher based on keyword specific search depending upon keyword density, we maintain it as per the standard rule of 1%, wherein other sites also has a similar keyword density.

On proper scrutinizing, we have found that the other side has got much more image links with proper ALT tags than us. Do search engines give more priority to the image links! It is also worthy mentioned that a proper internal linking within the site have also found to be highly effective in SERP. So, if your web pages have got a balanced and structured internal links, distributed evenly over the pages, search engines value them even more. At times, they are given almost equivalent weightage of back links.

We all know search engine algorithm are never revealed and the challenge lies in breaking the secret and mostly by trial and error, but the vulnerability shown by search engines in the recent past in case of SERP has beaten all past experience.

It is all about Joomla, the new CMS on board

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Just as any title by default shows the inner meaning of the content so also web pages have relevant titles. A web page containing a title ‘Professional web solutions provider’ implies that the page is going to talk about web solutions and associated fields. Along with the ages search engine crawlers and spiders have also started emphasizing on the title as a gateway to the content of that page.

Today there are several web tools to cross check the relevance of a title with its attached content as well as stipulations have been imposed by the browsers regarding the permissible width of a title. Hence, the title does not mean only the collection of asymmetric words or keywords rather the challenge is to make the title meaningful and attractive to the visitors as well as to the search engines remaining within the limited character length as stipulated by most of the common browsers.

Here comes the role of CMS or most reputed link directories or customized software which can automate the title without or with very little intervention of the site owner or webmaster. Most of the CMS packages acquire meaningful keywords or sentences to build up the titles unless exclusively mentioned otherwise. This is to be noted that CMS, link directory or customized software prefer to use the category name or the name of the post header/article in the title. Some of them also embed name of their own software in the title. The significant disadvantage of this method being the appearance of the software name in the title page dilutes one’s potential or dignity a bit. While on the other hand the advantage being the popularity of the software increases the chance of your page being touched upon by a wide gamut of visitors who prefer to search by the name of the software or associated keywords.

Usage of popular software as a web development tool has been found to work positively even in the eyes of the search engines. So why not give it a try?

Newer strategy for search queries from Google

Monday, May 19th, 2008

In order to comply with the private needs for websites Google plans to slowly do away with the search queries erasing them in a matter of a year and a half to two years. This came back to back with other group strategies which Google declared it wants to implement so as to improve its imparted services.

They will be opting for a new data retention policy which makes it virtually impossible for users to be attached to what they search for on net. The plan is that Mountain View Internet Company will cloud the information it collects about users who browse through Google. Google will thus purge mostly all private relevant information about the source of queries so that no one can trace the queries back to individual users.

Kurt Opsahl, an attorney praised Google’s decision declaring that it was heading in an appropriate direction. Previously AOL had made a high-profile blunder by posting 19 million search queries online as part of a research project. Unfortunately the information was used to identify some of the users arising in public outrage to be followed by a string of resignations within the Company.

Various foreign laws and cyber legislations in force enforce Google to log user information for up to two years in the legal context. Google said the reason for incorporating newer schemes were in response to the reviewed feedback from privacy groups and the Norwegian Data Protection Authority. Google said it believes in such regular updates which keep it off malpractices and disorders which are bound to creep into companies of its stature. It further reiterated that it wants to remove its deficiencies right from its roots instead of trimming just the shoots. Thus Google said, providing a transparent environment to users is all it is about.

The Twitter Experiment

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Twitter Stats

Lately I have been experimenting with Twitter as there is alot of buzz surrounding the social site, so I decided to do an experiment just to see how much traffic twitter can deliver and is it worth it? Well I decided to do this experiment on this current blog for 1 month this was between April 14th 08 – May 14th 08. As you can see from the stats above twitter had been sending around 120 uniques a day which is ok. I have been carefully tracking these visitors and although I cant track how many people are personally bookmarking the site I can track my subscribers. So since I started this I have got a few extra subscribers than normal daily. But if you take a look at the bounce rate from twitter it is extrodinarily high with alot of people staying on the blog for less than 1 min. Therefore from this experiment I have learnt that although twitter has the potential to send alot of traffic how much of this is actually worth it? Ok it may be because of the fact that most people on twitter dont know what SEO is and I may have been targetting the wrong audience but I feel for most online businesses or blogs looking to bring in targetted traffic twitter is not the way to go.

Feel free to leave comments of your twitter traffic and if it has been succesful to your niche. One great thing about twitter though is the communications you can have with people and you can learn alot and obtain a lot of knowledge so just participating and speaking to a wide variety of people can give you a great headstart.
