Trends In SEO for 2008

Talking about the trends is always good to start with summarizing the previous tendencies that prevailed in the SEO field lately. In this particular area, SEO, there were three major factors that influenced the website visibility or the so called web presence of it more then others. They are:

Original, keywords rich content

Number of incoming relevant links

W3C compatible HTML code

Search engine giants like Google have stressed on the fact that they tend to value the websites that have a greater “offline” influence - higher in their search results rankings. For example, if you search for “Walmart Christmas specials” you would be probably getting results with links to the Walmart’s official page rather than the any other third party advertisement.

This is becoming of even greater importance in year 2008 as we have to take into consideration that very often today, you don’t find anything relevant following your search engine results. As the result (and you obviously know that search engine technology is constantly developing) rules of the SEO are changing. Black-hat SEO is being even more ineffective as the search engines introduce smarter tweaks in their algorithms of calculating the Page Rank (by Google, inc) and query results.

So, the main focus of the search engines for the days to come is going to be nothing but the website content. Relevant website content. The more informative it is – the more people are going to read it, bookmark it and recommend it to their friends. OS Commerce based websites that promote and sell their products are very welcome to have more reviews of the products, testimonials of their proud customers, cover stories by the press or TV as that is something that brings more of their potential customers to them.

And you cannot get higher results by using the  “11111!!!!!!!!!” tweak like some people did back in 2004, unless you want your website to get banned and never appear in the search results again.

Link Building Tips

BacklinksAs we all know link building is the major and has been the major hot topic in the SEO world for years.

Lets go back to the beginning before the existence of the artificial intelligent search engines, with very smart and clever algothirms. The old days were great the only way to really get your site noticed was word of mouth - posting your link in forums and other discussion so that people would actually be interested and click on your site. Nowadays the links are still there but are perceived in such a different way now we need to obtain them links not to be clicked on but to be picked up by the search engines spiders. Here we have a look at ways to obtaining these:

Natural Links

Natural links are the best way possible to obtain rankings but are very hard the key is to keep writing unique relevant content and eventually people will start linking back to you. Another half natural way is to submit your sites to top directories this will cause a bounce on effect as most small directories extract content and listings from the larger ones giving you quality one-way links.

Paid Links

Paid links is very much disapproved by most major search engines due to the fact that links are meant to be given to you in a natural way by webmasters because they enjoy your content or what you have to offer. Purchasing links does some what the opposite as it is like paying your way up the SERPs. In the end we all know that gaining links naturally is a very hard task these days as there are billions of web pages, so the best advice fo buying links is find sites that do not tell the whole world they are selling links as the search engines will find out and penalize every site that is involved.

Reciprocal Links

Reciprocal Links have also been somewhat devalued by the search engines lately especially with google due to the same reasons as above, we still think reciprocal links do still have slight value so try and get links that are the same theme as your site and related to the users - and again try to just obtain these via one on one discussions with the webmaster in question.

Three way links

We feel that three way links are a much better alternative than reciprocal linking as there is more weight on these sort of links due to the fact that the site that links back to you, you do not have to link back to them. e.g If we link to www.wordpress.org and they link back to us from a totally different site they have.

Article Links

Article links are a very good way to obtain natural backlinks especially with the rise of social media sites. The way to do this is write a great article or a news flash on your niche. Submit them to sites such as Digg or Propeller and once popular they will bring you in a ton of natural backlinks which the search engine will love.

So whatever ways you decide to do remember stick to the search engines guidelines, as you can never trick them.

Search Engine Optimization Vs Social Media Optimization

Social Media OptimizationSites such as You-tube, Digg, Stumbleupon and Propeller have become a major marketing tool and is looking at becoming the next generation of online marketing.

Social Media Optimization (SMO) has the power to bring in large amounts of targetted niche traffic both very quickly and on a long term basis, unlike tradittional SEO which is more of a steady traffic load. Weighing out both SEO and SMO both have there positive effects and both go hand in hand, but as companies now are looking for quick turnaround times SMO is a great way to achieve that while slowly build up the position of the SERP ranking to also achieve the desired keyword positions in the major search engines. Here we will compare the benefits of both Search Engine Optimization and Social Media Optimization.

Benefits of Seo:

  1. Targetted Traffic
  2. Long term SERP’s Positions and traffic
  3. Cost Effective
  4. Authority Status
  5. Excellent Return on Investment

Benefits of SMO

  1. Heavy Traffic very quickly
  2. Advertising directly to prospective clients
  3. Great backlinks
  4. Word of mouth effectiveness SMO brings
  5. Share your content with video and audio

As you can see both have equal benefits, although some people believe SMO is better than SEO and vice versa  - we feel that both optmization methods cannot be compared to each other as if both done correctly will fit like a needle and thread. For example you submit a story to Digg, your story gets very popular beinging in floods of traffic in the short term, but it then has a knock on effect with webmasters and blogs linking back to that popular story thus giving a nice selection of natural backlinks which the search engines love.

SEO and SMO will be around for years to come and both will play there part in making a site successful so instead of compaing them we should join them to create one SEOMS.

Happy Optimizing

Learn How To Perform Keyword Optimization. Part 1: Defining keywords

Let’s say you are about to set up a number of activities to make your website or blog get better results and higher rankings in the search engines. This means you want more people who search for similar topics sites or blogs get the links to your site in first place. If you do want that, you need to define keywords that:

   1. Clearly describe the purpose and content of your site
   2. Make your site show up as close to the top 10 results page as possible.

Obviously, search engine optimization is not all about the keywords but choosing them wrong can decline your entire search engine optimization strategy results, so it is better to do it the best possible way you can.

Your homepage.

Analyze it and write down the words and phrases that describe it precisely. Think thoroughly of two or three word phrases, because it’s virtually impossible to get a top position for single word keywords. Next step, would be analyzing the demand and supply for those keywords, and choose the ones with high demand and low supply.

You might want to check the demand for your selected keywords by using Overture’s Search Term Suggestion Tool:

Overture Keyword Tool  or

Free Keywords

It tells you if your selected keywords are popular, and provides you with other similar keywords that you may not have thought about, which may even be more relevant to your site.

Next time, we are going to talk about how to use this tool best and also how to get Google help you with search engine optimization for free.

Google Domination

An insight into googles total UK domination of the search market, as you can see from the stats created - Google UK have total domination in the search market, we have compared them to Yahoo Uk and the once top gun Altavista.

Google Stats

As you can see not only have they dominated the market but they have more than tripled yahoo’s traffic stats. Therefore beckoning the question can Google make or break a website?

We believe so - you may ask the reason how can you make a presumption whether a business can be broken by just one company. The answers are pure and simple - lets just take a trip back in time to when Altavista was the place to be seen, as you can see by the stats Altavista is close to scraping the barrell traffic wise - we ask ourselves how can a Search Engine go from Hero to Zero in a few years, well the answer is googles algothirm and search results they have by far implented over the last few year technologies which cannot and will not be beat. As more and more businesses are establishing a presence in the online world - we see people optimizing there sites not for the visitors anymore but for Google. Therefore it will take a huge budget and a bold company to even come close to the mighty G, unless of course Google make there own downfall! This beckons to yet be seen lets see what the future brings, but all in all without Google the online world would be a world for blackhatters and spammers.

Basic 1-2-3 SEO Principles

Hey as you know we are kicking off a new blog to give advice, updates and news on any thing related to Search engine optimization - we will also be throwing in freebies now and again for our loyal visitors.

To start off with we will be discussing the basic SEO principles that should be performed

 1. Do your keyword research before you even create your website or online business, try to find the most relevant searched keywords for your business - look at how many searches that keyword gets and most importantly look at the competition. There is no point trying obtain keywords such as “Dating” in the first year of your site as this is near to impossible to be achieved due to the mass amount of competition. A good free keyword tool to get you started is located at Free Keyword Tracker. Then go to register your domain, try obtaining a domain that is specific to your chosen keyword and register yor domain for atleast 3 years this way you will build up more trust than a yearly registered domain

2. Once you have chosen your keywords, then comes the design and implementation process - this is where you can carefully make the site SE friendly and write your initial unique content - although onsite optimization is not considered very important anymore we still believe it plays a major part in the overall ranking of a site so complete your meta tags, description and keywords. Once your site is complete make sure is is fully validated by using the W3 Validator.

 3. Now comes the process of getting your rankings so you will need to get plenty of links back to your site, the way to do this is to write unique content that webmasters will link back to, try to get links from relevant sites so if you have a dating site obviously get links from related sites. Although directory submissions have lost weight we still feel these are important in non paid directories - try to slow down the link process, do not be in a rush as you may get penalised if you try to get rankings within a month - SEO is a long and hard process and if done correctly is very rewarding. The main aim to concentrate on is to write unique content take park in discussions in forums etc - try to submit your site to the social media sites (this will be discussed at another time).

Good Luck on all you SEO efforts
