Basic search tips explained

As a webmaster, you want to find the best sources to back link and populate. As a surfer, you obviously want to find just what you need within the shortest possible time, rather than have to open multiple pages on a new tab just trying to locate what you need. One would think what a waste of time. Of course all the information you need is online, but do you know how to look at it. Make search engines work for you and reduce the time spent looking for what you need.

When you key in keywords, instead of typing in multiple keywords that will result in too many finds, use your target search terms in quotes. As such, if you are looking for SEO news in the business niche, type in “SEO news business”, instead of SEO news business, because the results will be far too many for the latter.

If you are looking for information on light but not electric supplies, your search input should look like light -bulb. Of course, you’ll have to use average intelligence to get to the right search times but this will save you a lot of time and guarantee a larger degree of search oriented finds rather than random finds.

My job would be immensely easier if everyone knew this. Unfortunately not many do. It is nice to see tips like this floating around. I spend time every day at http://seodan.wordpress.com trying to help bloggers choose the correct keywords to their blog. If everyone was searching for the correct terms… I would have nothing to do… on second thought. TAKE THIS DOWN!! just kidding, nice tip.

Very good tips. Google searches aren’t as basic as they seem and can be very powerful if you know some of the deeper features.

  3. I second that on the if more people knew about this…

It seemsl like Google would point this out more since their ultimate goal is to provide the exact result someone is looking for….

    Keep up the good work.

Great article! I wish more people did know about this as it makes life searching on the net a lot easier! I taught my parents how to do this and now they find things alot faster than they use to when they went through like 10 pages just to find one simple thing. Thanks for pointing this out to inform everyone!

  6. Good tips. You are right, if we use such searching tips, it saves lots of time. For example if you are searching for directories with your targetted keyword in innerpages, you can type as web directory “your keyword” in google search box.

I know what you mean. Many times I find myself saving a lot of time especially with the - operator. Often one thing sounds a lot like a common item but when it isn’t it is hard to find the less popular item.

Good article! It really is surprising just how many people really do not have a clue about how to use search engines! “No, they are not mind readers” I often find myself thinking! And another thing I still cannot understand - if you know the website address (e.g. for Hotmail) why would you look it up in Google? It is NOT faster! Anyway…!
